  • Manchester United hopes for progress in negotiations with Xavi

Manchester United are currently expected to be in talks to bring in one of their potential manager candidates to replace Ruben Amorim, it has been reported.

Manchester United set manager’s schedule

Despite his constant struggles at Old Trafford, it always seemed unlikely that Man United would make a hasty decision regarding Amorim. He seemed very much their guy. But then everything fell apart between the 40-year-old and director of football Jason Wilcox, with Wilcox asking Amorim to change the system.

This left the manager dissatisfied and reportedly felt that his departure from Old Trafford was inevitable as he was not supported by the hierarchy at Old Trafford.

Now the Red Devils are back to square one, appointing Darren Fletcher on an interim basis and setting an already reported timeline for when their next manager will arrive.

If INEOS waits until the summer to make a decision, the likes of Oliver Glassner and Kieran McKenna could become serious options.

The former is set to leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season, when his contract expires, and Man United could make a move unless there is a final change.

Bookmakers have opinions…

Glasner, who won the FA Cup last season and qualified for the Europa Conference League, could go down as Crystal Palace’s best ever manager by the time next summer rolls around, but a big move could be in store for him.

However, Austrians are not the only option. Manchester United are hopeful of progressing negotiations with Xavi Hernandez, according to reports in Spain.

Manchester United hopes for progress in negotiations with Xavi

The Barcelona legend has been unemployed since leaving the Spanish club in 2024. That’s not to say there haven’t been offers, but the 45-year-old has simply been waiting for the right opportunity to present itself, and the Man United job could be just that.

Although his time at Barcelona ended in difficult circumstances, Xavi is remembered for a tumultuous period at the Camp Nou, winning La Liga and introducing several key stars of the academy, including Lamine Yamal.

In contrast, Amorim often targeted academy stars, perhaps halting the progress of impressive midfielder Koby Mainu. If there’s anyone who will benefit from Xavi’s addition, it will be Carrington alumni.

Another problem with Amorim was in his system. His 3-4-2-1 system divided opinion at Old Trafford, but it is where Xavi can thrive. The Spaniard would immediately switch to a 4-3-3 attacking formation, bringing entertainment back to the club.

Of course, there’s no denying that it’s a bold step. Unfortunately, this was far from Xavi’s first rodeo. The former midfielder has ridden a wave of turmoil at Barcelona and could do the same at Man United.
