Nate Danielson Sent Back to AHL’s Grand Rapids by Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings announced on Tuesday morning that 21-year-old Nate Danielson has been sent down to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. This reassignment follows Danielson’s initial experience in the NHL, which included moments of promise alongside some typical challenges.

Danielson, who was the ninth overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, made a strong start in Detroit with one goal and three assists in his first nine games, showcasing the talent that earned him a top draft spot. However, his scoring slowed significantly as the season went on, with only three points in his last 19 games and an 11-game stretch without a point before his reassignment.

The decision wasn’t surprising, given the Red Wings’ tightening lineup and reduced ice time opportunities. Detroit recently reinstated John Leonard, who has consistently impacted the team this season, increasing the depth and making it tougher for Danielson to secure steady playing minutes.

Returning to Grand Rapids could be beneficial for Danielson. Last season, he tallied 39 points in 71 games with the Griffins, gaining confidence and momentum that helped prepare him for his NHL debut. After recovering from a preseason injury this year, he added five points in four AHL games before being called back to Detroit.

Now back with the Griffins, who are having a historic season with a 28-1-1 record and poised to be one of the best AHL teams ever, Danielson will have the chance to regain his scoring touch and take on significant responsibilities in various game situations.

This move has sparked debate among fans, some of whom question why Marco Kasper wasn’t also sent down. Kasper’s numbers have dipped sharply from last season’s 37 points to just six points in 43 games this year, projecting to 12 points by season’s end. However, Detroit is giving Kasper more time to rebound, placing him on the top line with Dylan Larkin and John Leonard. If Kasper’s performance doesn’t improve, a demotion to Grand Rapids could still be on the horizon.

For now, Danielson heads back to the AHL with renewed confidence and a clear path to develop further, positioning himself for another shot at the NHL in the future.

Fan Take: This news is crucial for hockey fans because it highlights the challenges young players face breaking into the NHL and the importance of development leagues like the AHL. Danielson’s reassignment could be a turning point that helps him mature into a key player, ultimately strengthening the future of both the Red Wings and the sport.
