  • Manchester United begin search for new manager
  • Manchester United could turn to Michael Carrick

Manchester United are looking for a caretaker manager and could look to a familiar face to take charge at Old Trafford for the remainder of the season.

Manchester United begin search for new manager

Darren Fletcher will be in charge for now as Ruben Amorim steps down and the Red Devils look forward to the remainder of the season under a new manager.

Her departure under acrimonious circumstances resulted in the breakdown of her relationship with 40-year-old Jason Wilcox, leaving the pair with no choice but to go their separate ways rather than reconcile.

Manchester United’s official statement regarding Amorim’s departure was scathing: “Manchester United sit sixth in the Premier League and the club’s leadership have reluctantly decided that now is the right time to make a change.

“This gives the team the best opportunity to achieve the best results in the Premier League. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

The Red Devils, who sit sixth in the Premier League, will likely want him to return to Old Trafford on a six-month deal as the process of finding his replacement is currently underway and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seeking interim cover until a full-time appointment is made in the summer.

Ultimately, with the fast-paced nature of the Premier League fixtures, quick recruitment is needed and the Red Devils hierarchy may have someone else in mind to replace Amorim.

Manchester United could turn to Michael Carrick

United have begun talks to keep Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Michael Carrick on an interim basis until the end of the season, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

iNews further reported that Carrick has been named as an interim solution to lead the club until the end of the season. He is one of the ‘top candidates’ to replace Amorim and will become available shortly after leaving Teesside at the end of last term.

Known for using a 4-2-3-1 formation, he led Boro to victory in 63 of their 136 games. The 44-year-old also recorded 24 draws and 49 losses in all competitions, earning around 1.57 points per match in the Sky Bet Championship.

Carrick, who was previously labeled as a “class player” by Cristiano Ronaldo, has been caretaker manager of Manchester United for three games since Solskjaer’s departure in 2021, winning two and drawing one of the three.

Short-term fixes are not something clubs ideally do. Nevertheless, the Wallsend-born man is seen as a safety with extensive working knowledge of the club, both in a playing and coaching capacity.

Moreover, even if it is not yet clear whether he is keen to return to Old Trafford, the prospect of being in the running for a regular role may be too tempting to refuse.
