MLB Buzz: Blue Jays Target Kyle Tucker, Cubs Seek Infield Boost, Mets Focus on Rotation Upgrade

The 2025-26 MLB offseason is still unfolding as of January 7th, with a notable number of top free agents remaining unsigned—five of the top six and eight of the top 14. As pitchers and catchers prepare for spring training, a swift resolution to these free agency decisions would be welcome.

Looking at the Toronto Blue Jays, they have recently signed third baseman Kazuma Okamoto from Japan but the possibility of re-signing free agent Bo Bichette appears slim, with reports suggesting a reunion is unlikely. Meanwhile, the Jays are intensifying their pursuit of outfielder Kyle Tucker. Although there were talks that Bichette might return if he agreed to a one-year contract with an opt-out clause or if Anthony Santander was traded, Santander’s poor first year and hefty remaining contract make a trade difficult. The Jays find it easier to strengthen their outfield, which makes Tucker a higher priority than Bichette.

The Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox are both showing interest in Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman, whose roles could slightly overlap despite playing different infield positions. The Cubs may replace Matt Shaw at third base with Bregman and could potentially shift Bichette or Nico Hoerner around the infield. For the Red Sox, Bichette and Bregman could fill key batting lineup spots, allowing for flexibility with younger player Marcelo Mayer.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are also considering Bregman but face financial constraints with Ketel Marte’s large contract still active. They will likely have to choose between keeping Marte or pursuing Bregman, with younger player Jordan Lawler possibly filling secondary infield roles.

As for the New York Mets, their approach to shoring up their starting rotation is progressing slowly. While they are interested in pitchers like Framber Valdez, the focus remains on trade options involving names like Tarik Skubal and Freddy Peralta. Currently, their rotation includes several less established pitchers, with room for additions via trades or free agency.

Fan Take: This ongoing offseason drama is crucial for baseball fans as it highlights how teams balance talent, contracts, and budgets to build competitive rosters. The moves made now could significantly reshape the power dynamics within the league and influence the excitement and quality of play in the upcoming season.
