  • Rangers expected to make new offer for star
  • Why Penrice is a repeat of Rangers’ Barron player
        • Rangers are ‘negotiating’ to sell Ibrox, where contract terms were worse than Dowell’s

Glasgow Rangers central midfielder Conor Barron produced another impressive performance for Danny Rolle’s side as he provided two assists in the Scottish Premiership win over Aberdeen at Ibrox on Tuesday night.

The Scotland international scored two pinpoint set-pieces to assist Emmanuel Fernandes and Nicholas Raskin in a 2-0 win against the Dons in Glasgow.

According to Sofascore, Baron started 23 of 28 games in the division in his debut season with Gers before starting 13 of 19 games in the Premiership this season, indicating he has established himself as a regular starter since moving to Ibrox in 2024.

The central midfielder was snapped up from Aberdeen after his contract expires in the summer of 2024, and his past experience in the league with the Dons ensures he joins the squad as an immediate force.

Rangers expected to make new offer for star

Baron’s performances for the club over the past 18 months highlight the value of signing a player who already has Premiership experience. Because they know the department well and can make an immediate impact as reliable performers.

According to TEAMtalk, Glasgow Rangers remain interested in signing Premiership left-back James Penrith.

According to reports, Gers turned down one offer for the full-back from AEK Athens in the January transfer window, but that doesn’t mean their interest in him has ended.

It added that the Scottish giants are expected to return with an improved offer for the former Hearts star, meaning a new bid could be submitted within days.

TEAMtalk also revealed that Penrith is keen to move to Ibrox this month in order to link up with Rolle’s squad and return to Scotland, suggesting personal terms are less of an issue.

Why Penrice is a repeat of Rangers’ Barron player

Like Baron, Penrith arrives in Glasgow as a proven performer in the Premiership and is already familiar with the country and the league, which could help him hit the ground running in the second half of the season.

While it is possible to hit the jackpot by finding a hidden gem with a player like Hamza Igamane, there is less risk associated with signing proven domestic talent and no need to worry about how they will fit into the league.

As such, the Rangers should always consider recruiting a mix of both talents, allowing them to combine reliable, consistent domestic performers with potentially elite young talent to build a well-rounded and successful team.

Penrith joined AEK Athens from Hearts last summer after impressing with his performances in the 2024/25 Premiership. In other words, he will be recruited as a reliable and consistent performer in the country.

The 27-year-old star is an experienced defender who has played a number of games for Scotland and now Greece and could make an immediate impact at Ibrox.

According to SofaScore, Penrith played 33 games for Hearts in the Scottish Premiership in 2024/25, scoring two goals and providing five assists, while also winning 53% of his defensive matches.

This shows he is capable of influencing games both offensively and defensively, something backed up by his 3.4 tackles and interceptions per league game for Jam Tarts in his final year in Scotland.

As shown in the table above, the Scottish full-back has the potential to contribute more to the team than Jayden Meghoma both in and out of possession as a left-back if he can return to the level he showed at Hearts.

Penrith, who was claimed by STV radio presenter Ewen Cameron to be a “perfect fit for Rangers”, could be a great signing for the Light Blues given his Premiership experience and level of performance to date.

Baron has become a mainstay in Rangers’ midfield, as he is a Scotland international who knows the league well and is a consistent performer who allows other players, including new players and players from overseas, to drop in around him.

Penrith know they have dependable players in defense and midfield such as Jack Butland, John Souter, Baron and Penrith, so Rolle could become one of the mainstays in the country, able to provide reliable performances to experiment with in other positions.

Rangers are ‘negotiating’ to sell Ibrox, where contract terms were worse than Dowell’s

Rangers are reportedly looking to move on from a failure who had an even worse contract than Kieran Dowell.
