At the 100th Anniversary Edition of the Surrey Championship at Oceanside Country Club, what appeared to be a rout turned into a battle with 18 holes remaining.

Amelie Zelsman, who started the day with a seven-stroke lead, shot an 8-under 64 on Friday to move into a tie for the lead with Mia Hammond, who started the day with a six-shot lead.

They have a 15-under 201 through 54 holes, but they’re not exactly alone. Just three strokes behind is Carrie Hollenbaugh, who has won the last two Surrey tournaments. Hollenbaugh shot a 68 on Friday, leaving a three-peat within range.

Hammond’s round suffered damage in the final stages when he hit a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 17th hole. The bogey left Hammond with a 1-over 37 on the back nine, but Zelsman played the second nine with a 4-under 32, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 12th.

The next golfer closest to the top three was Palm Coast’s Alexandra Gazzzoli, who shot a 68 on Friday to sit alone in fourth place at 5 under.
