Napoli have listed Joao Gomez as their main target this summer, but no deal has been reached yet.

Negotiations with Wolverhampton are yet to progress, but the club are said to have verbally agreed a financial framework with the player. This suggests that a move is likely in June, and only in January if the right conditions are met.

Gomez is a player in demand.

Sporting director Mana sees Gomez as a key part of next season’s midfield, dynamic, winning the ball and with good tempo, exactly the profile Napoli are looking for.

There is also clear movement around Atlético Madrid. Coach Simeone is pushing for the acquisition of a midfielder who fits his system, is strong in pressing, and is strong in duels, and Joao Gomez was on his list of candidates. Although there are internal cost concerns, interest remains high and communications through the players’ camps are keeping information active. Atlético are expected to aim for a January start, with plans for a wider range of activities for the summer.

Manchester United have been tracking Joao Gomez since the summer and see him as someone who would add energy, aggression and coverage to their midfield in a post-Casemilo set-up. According to sources, catch off side The scouting report has been positive and suggests he is well suited to the tempo of the Premier League. Crystal Palace are also eyeing Gomez as an option to cover their injury-hit midfield, with either a January loan or a more cost-effective solution being considered. Previous interest in Liverpool has waned recently.

Financially, Wolves are expected to command a high valuation. Napoli have reportedly reached an agreement with the player, suggesting progress has been made regarding his salary and contract length, but if Wolves fail to meet their offer, it will be difficult for him to leave in January. Cost will also be a deciding factor for Atletico and Manchester United, deciding whether to move now or wait. Therefore, a loan with an option or obligation to buy is most realistic for a January contract, and a straight full contract is more likely in the summer. Gomez’s age, fitness and Premier League experience strengthen Wolves’ position at the negotiating table.
