  • Why would Villa want Palace striker Mateta?

Aston Villa have officially registered an interest in Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as manager Unai Emery ramps up his search for a new centre-forward for the second half of the season, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The Frenchman has enjoyed an impressive campaign at Selhurst Park and Villa have established themselves as favorites with Palace willing to sell him for a suitable price.

Crystal Palace could use Mateta’s departure to help secure Villa forward Evan Guesand, who has been on their shortlist since last summer.

Gessando’s combination of physical and technical qualities will be attractive to Palace’s recruitment team, and moving Mateta would create both the financial and team space to sign him.

Mateta is one of Palace’s most valuable assets. He has contributed goals regularly over the past two seasons and is developing a reputation as a reliable Premier League finisher.

However, due to his contract situation and growing interest from big clubs, the Eagles now intend to consider offers subject to meeting the €40 million threshold.

Emery wants to add attacking depth to his squad for the second half of the season.

Villa rely heavily on Ollie Watkins in goal, so Emery will be looking to add new options to his attack as his team challenges on multiple fronts.

Mateta is known for his strong hold-up play, sharp movement and physical strength.

Villa are exploring a range of options including Tammy Abraham and other forwards from across Europe, but Mateta has emerged as one of the most attainable targets this month.

Juventus are also interested in signing Mateta, especially with injuries having affected their attacking line-up.

However, according to reports in Italy, the Turin giants are unwilling to meet Palace’s €40 million transfer fee.
