Zuffa Boxing has recently signed a new world champion, Jay Opetaia, who holds the IBF and The Ring cruiserweight titles. The promotion, co-founded by UFC President and CEO Dana White, announced the signing on Instagram, with Opetaia expressing enthusiasm about his future and upcoming unification fights. The undefeated boxer, boasting a 29-0 record with 23 knockouts, is currently in his second stint as the IBF cruiserweight champion, having secured victories by knockout in his last four matches, including two wins over former champion Mairis Briedis. Established last year by White along with Alarusik and Turki Alarusik, Zuffa Boxing operates as a joint venture between UFC and WWE’s parent company, TKO Group Holdings.
Zuffa Boxing plans to host 12 events this year, kicking off with a card on January 23 featuring a headline fight between Callum Walsh and Carlos Ocampo, which will be streamed exclusively on Paramount+. Their debut event in September included the undisputed title fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terrence Crawford.
Fan Take: This signing marks a significant step for Zuffa Boxing as it continues to build a strong roster and increase its presence in the sport. For fight fans, having a top cruiserweight like Jay Opetaia in the mix promises thrilling matchups and a potential shake-up in the division’s landscape.
