Roman Josi Reflects on His Journey with the Nashville Predators as He Approaches 1,000 Career Games

It’s been 5,171 days since Roman Josi, then 21 years old, was promoted from the Milwaukee Admirals to the Nashville Predators. He clearly recalls his NHL debut on November 26, 2011, when he played his first game against the Detroit Red Wings at the iconic Joe Louis Arena, sharing the ice with legends like Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom.

On Thursday, as the Predators host the Ottawa Senators, Josi will mark his 1,000th career game, making him the first player in franchise history to reach this milestone while having spent his entire career with one team. Reflecting on this achievement, Josi described it as a special milestone and an opportunity to appreciate his journey with the organization.

Josi’s impressive track record extends beyond Nashville, with accolades in the NHL and on the international stage. As one of the top defensemen of his generation, he notably became only the second defenseman to lead an NHL franchise in scoring, joining Boston Bruins legend Ray Bourque. Josi boasts career stats of 198 goals, 554 assists, and 752 points across 999 games.

Predators head coach Andrew Brunette highlighted the rarity of playing 1,000 games with a single team, especially in today’s era shaped by free agency and the CBA. Josi has also helped elevate Swiss hockey globally, earning three silver medals at the IIHF World Championships, competing in the 2014 Olympics, and preparing for another appearance at the 2026 Games.

Though hailing from Switzerland, Nashville has become Josi’s home, where he met his wife Ellie and where their two children were born and are growing up. His family plans to attend the milestone game, sharing in the celebration of his remarkable career.

Josi’s journey to 1,000 games is notable given his health struggles, including a diagnosis of orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) that sidelined him for part of the 2024-25 season. Predators GM Barry Trotz confirmed Josi was fully healthy and ready for the new season, with Brunette praising his strong return to form.

Josi credits the team’s staff for supporting his health and the organization for helping him reach this milestone. Brunette reflected on his own 1,000th game experience, describing it as emotionally challenging but a testament to a player’s perseverance.

Teammates have celebrated Josi’s achievement with gifts such as a limited edition Norquain watch and VIP tickets to the US Open. Despite the special occasion, Josi remains focused on leading the Predators to a win against the Senators and preventing a third consecutive loss.

Fan Take: Roman Josi’s 1,000-game milestone is a testament to loyalty, resilience, and excellence in hockey, making him a true icon for the Predators and inspiring players worldwide. This achievement highlights the dedication required to sustain elite performance, enriching the sport and connecting fans to the heart of the game.
