The $1.25 million Apple Blossom Handicap (G1), held at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, has been added to the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, Breeders’ Cup Limited and Oaklawn announced on Thursday. This inclusion means the winner of the race will earn an automatic spot and have their entry fee covered for the related event at the 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championship, which is set for October 30-31 at Keeneland Racetrack in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Apple Blossom Handicap, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies aged four and older, now grants automatic entry into the $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1). It will be the first Breeders’ Cup Challenge race in the Distaff category this year. Dora Delgado, Breeders’ Cup Chief Racing Officer, praised the Apple Blossom Handicap for its long-standing prestige among North America’s top races for fillies and mares, emphasizing its importance in the Road to Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff and the overall quality of competition in the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series.

Luis A. Serra, Oaklawn President, called this a significant achievement for Oaklawn and one of American horse racing’s most esteemed races. The Apple Blossom Handicap, which first started in 1958, has been a core event at Oaklawn for nearly seven decades. It was awarded Grade 1 status in 1982 and has kept that status since 1992. Renowned champions like Azerbaijan, Zenyatta, and Torpedo Anna have secured victories here, underscoring the race’s reputation as a key proving ground for elite female horses.

As part of the Challenge Series perks, Breeders’ Cup will cover pre-entry and entry fees for the Apple Blossom Handicap winner at the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, valued at $60,000. Additionally, if the winning horse was nominated before the challenge race, the owner receives a $10,000 cash bonus. All Breeders’ Cup Challenge winners are also granted special travel allowances to the World Championship, offering $10,000 for North American starters based outside Kentucky and $40,000 for international starters. To qualify for these benefits, winners must be nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program by the pre-entry deadline on October 19, 2026.

It also promises a high level of excitement for fans following the Road to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, showcasing some of the finest fillies and mares in the sport.
