Denny Hamlin from Huntersville, N.C., is not yet fully prepared to race but plans to drive a Joe Gibbs Racing car in the preseason opener next week. Following the tragic house fire on December 28 that resulted in his father’s death and left his mother injured, Hamlin is making his first visit to the JGR shop this Thursday after finishing his preseason obligations, including a FOX Sports photo shoot.

Typically, drivers have a brief 5-10 minute interview with FOX Sports Digital on show day. Hamlin, aged 45, expressed gratitude for the condolences he received and highlighted the close bond within the NASCAR community. When asked about his condition, he simply replied that he was doing fine.

Hamlin, who often acknowledges the efforts his parents made for his racing career, chose not to discuss his father’s passing in detail, noting that his father was terminally ill during the fire. His wife shared a photo on Instagram of a birthday party their child celebrated, which his mother, Mary Lou, attended. Hamlin mentioned that his mother has both good and bad days but is improving.

When questioned about possibly sitting out the season, Hamlin confirmed his intention to race and fulfill his commitments. The season unofficially kicks off on February 1 at Bowman Gray Stadium, with the Daytona 500 starting two weeks later. Hamlin stated he had considered all options and reiterated his promise to Joe Gibbs and the Gibbs family.

This week marks Hamlin’s first time back in the shop since November. He acknowledged the team’s ongoing preparations and admitted they might be slightly behind schedule but hopeful to catch up quickly. Hamlin feels confident he will regain his racing focus once the season commences, though he has not yet actively prepared for the upcoming races.

Fan Take: This news is significant for NASCAR fans because it shows Hamlin’s resilience and commitment despite personal tragedy, highlighting the strong community spirit in the sport. His return could inspire both fans and fellow drivers, potentially impacting the competitive dynamics of the season ahead.
