Kevin Johnson, a former defensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles, died from blunt force trauma and stab wounds to the head, according to the Los Angeles County coroner. The 55-year-old was found unconscious at a homeless encampment on Wednesday morning and later pronounced dead. Authorities have classified his death as a homicide and are currently investigating.

Johnson was selected in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. Throughout his career, he played for the Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, and the Eagles. During his two seasons with Philadelphia, he recorded 43 tackles, seven sacks, and scored a touchdown by returning a fumble. In 1997, he appeared in 15 games for the Raiders. He also spent time in the Arena Football League with teams in Orlando and Los Angeles. A native of Los Angeles, Johnson attended Texas Southern University.

Investigators believe he was residing at the homeless encampment when he passed away. Friends noted that Johnson experienced health issues in his later years, which impacted his living situation.

Fan Take: This tragic news is a reminder that the careers and lives of professional athletes can face profound struggles after retirement. For basketball fans, it underscores the importance of supporting programs that provide health and social services to former players facing hardships, highlighting the need for continued care beyond the spotlight.
