Old Friends, a Thoroughbred retirement farm in Georgetown, Kentucky, sadly announces the passing of Elderfur, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Marathon (G3) winner, at the age of 21. Elderfur joined the farm in June 2014 alongside his companion goats, Google and Yahoo.

John Nicholson, President and CEO of Old Friends, described Elderfur as a determined and consistent racehorse, best known for his outstanding Breeders’ Cup performance. Since his arrival, Elderfur became a beloved figure among visitors and staff, and his loss is deeply felt by all who knew him.

Elderfur was a standout competitor in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon from 2009 to 2012, one of only seven horses to participate in more Breeders’ Cups over time. His racing career spanned 46 starts with 13 wins and 10 placements in the top three. Besides his Breeders’ Cup triumph under trainer Diane Morisi, he also secured victories in prestigious races such as the Brooklyn Handicap (G2), Greenwood Cup Stakes (G3), Turfway Park Fall Championship Stakes (G3), and Carl Hanford Memorial Stakes.

He made his racing debut at Belmont Park on September 13, 2008, representing breeder Shadwell Farm, and claimed the Greenwood Cup in 2013 before retiring. Elderfur’s retirement was marked by the delightful presence of his goat friends, Google and Yahoo, who entertained many visitors at Old Friends alongside him, although the goats predeceased Elderfur.

Dora Delgado, Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer of the Breeders’ Cup, praised Elderfur’s resilience and the dedication shown by the Old Friends team in caring for him, highlighting the impact Elderfur had both on the track and in retirement.

This tribute was first published by Paulick Report on January 22, 2026, in the Horse Care section.

Fan Take: Elderfur’s story is a touching reminder of the remarkable journeys racehorses undertake, both on the track and beyond. For horse racing fans, honoring champions like Elderfur emphasizes the importance of equine aftercare and deepens the connection between the sport’s history and its future.
