Fermin Aldeguer Eyes Potential Comeback from Injury at 2026 MotoGP Season Opener

Fermin Aldeguer’s physiotherapist has not dismissed the chance that the Gresini rider might compete in the opening race of the 2026 MotoGP season, though he will miss the pre-season testing due to a fractured femur sustained in a training accident earlier this month, which required surgery.

While the team has not provided a precise recovery timeline, it is widely anticipated that Aldeguer will sit out the pre-season tests in Sepang and Buriram, scheduled for February. The 2026 season kicks off in Thailand from February 27 to March 1, putting pressure on Aldeguer to recover quickly. Veteran MotoGP physiotherapist Aitor Tomas, who has worked with riders like Aleix Espargaro, Dani Pedrosa, and Pedro Acosta, is overseeing Aldeguer’s rehabilitation.

In an interview with Catalan media, Tomas confirmed Aldeguer will not be ready for pre-season testing but emphasized their determination to have him at the season opener. He explained, “The physiotherapist is not in charge; the role is to support the rider’s recovery and confidence day by day.” Tomas acknowledged that femur fractures require lengthy healing, and Aldeguer’s case is somewhat complicated. However, he cited Pedro Acosta’s similar injury during his Moto2 career, noting Acosta returned to riding just 15 days later.

Despite these encouraging parallels, Tomas stressed that each injury heals differently, and Aldeguer’s situation is more complex. As of now, Gresini has yet to disclose any plans for a replacement rider in case Aldeguer’s recovery extends past the season start.

Fan Take:
This update is crucial for racing fans because Aldeguer is one of the brightest young talents in MotoGP, and his absence could shake up the rookie dynamics next season. His recovery progress will be closely watched, as a strong return could inspire other injured riders and maintain the fierce competition in the championship.
