The highly anticipated welterweight championship bout between WBC titleholder Mario Barrios and standout fighter Ryan Garcia was officially announced on Monday, set to take place on February 21 in Las Vegas. Dubbed “The Ring: High Stakes,” the match will occur at the T-Mobile Arena and will be available for live streaming exclusively on DAZN, as confirmed by Saudi General Entertainment Authority Chairman Turki Alarusik.

Ryan Garcia, holding a 27-1 record with 19 knockouts, is known for his vibrant personality and occasional controversies on social media, as well as being a former interim WBC lightweight champion. At 27 years old and hailing from Victorville, California, Garcia enters this title fight following a setback last May in New York’s Times Square where he lost a decision to WBA welterweight champion Rolando Romero. In April 2024, despite missing the weigh-in, Garcia defeated then-junior welterweight champion Devin Haney by decision, but their fight was later declared a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for the banned substance ostarine. Subsequently, Haney sued Garcia, who also received a one-year suspension for the drug violation. Expressing confidence, Garcia stated, “I will be world champion on February 21st.”

Mario Barrios, with a record of 29-2-2 and 18 knockouts, first captured the interim WBC welterweight title in 2023 thanks to a significant victory over Yordenis Ugas, where he managed to outpoint the former champion twice. After Terrence Crawford relinquished the undisputed title and was promoted to full champion, Barrios fought to draws against Abel Ramos and 46-year-old Manny Pacquiao in 2024 and July 2023, respectively. The 30-year-old San Antonio native recently dismissed trainer Bob Santos for the second time, opting to work with Hall of Fame coach Joe Goossen, who previously trained Garcia in four bouts, including Garcia’s 2013 knockout loss to Gervonta “Tank” Davis. Barrios reflected on his journey, saying, “Becoming WBC welterweight world champion wasn’t instantaneous. It was a promise to my family, my city, and everyone who believed in me fighting hard while no one was watching. San Antonio raised me. All the sacrifices I’ve made to get in that ring with me. This is my division and my time. I’m ready to show the world why the WBC title is here to stay.”

Barrios is also a former junior WBA welterweight champ but lost that title to Gervonta Davis by stoppage in 2021.
