Cunningham Applauds Rodman’s Fresh Contract Amid WNBA Negotiation Talks

The Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham reacted enthusiastically on Instagram to Washington Spirit star Trinity Rodman’s announcement that she had secured a major contract deal. On Thursday, Rodman finalized a groundbreaking three-year, $2 million agreement with Adidas.

With ongoing and unresolved negotiations between the WNBA and the players’ association over a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), Rodman’s Adidas deal came as an encouraging development, one that Cunningham fully supported. She celebrated by sharing an Adidas post highlighting Rodman on her Instagram Story, simply captioning it, “YESSS.”

Rodman’s new contract makes her the highest-paid player on the Washington Spirit and cements her status as a global female soccer star. After months of speculation about her NWSL future, she is now committed to the club through 2028.

Previously, Cunningham had taken a pointed jab at WNBA salaries during her appearance on “The Sunday Conversation” with Caleb Presley, describing alternative income avenues like OnlyFans as a “Plan B” to support players alongside the league. She emphasized the league’s importance as a platform for fan engagement, but also hinted at the need for players to seek additional financial security.

Meanwhile, negotiations between the WNBA and the WNBPA continue without resolution. The current CBA expired following multiple extensions, and although it remains temporarily in effect during a “status quo” period, key differences persist. Players advocate for around 30% of league gross revenue, while the league’s proposal revolves around 70% of net revenue, leaving significant gaps on revenue sharing and other critical issues.

Fan Take:
This news is significant for WNBA supporters as it highlights both the progress and ongoing challenges in securing fair compensation for women athletes. Rodman’s deal and Cunningham’s outspoken views spotlight the urgency for a more equitable agreement that values players and strengthens the future of women’s professional sports.
