Buffalo’s Sabers Are Making Tiny Trades—Here’s Why They Need to Go Big Now

The Buffalo Sabers’ first trade under new GM Jarmo Kekalainen took place on Saturday, but it was underwhelming for fans expecting a blockbuster move. The team traded promising forward Viktor Nuchev to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for veteran defenseman Gavin Bayreuther, who will play with the AHL’s Rochester Americans, while Nuchev will remain in the Canes’ organization with the Chicago Wolves.

There remains ample time for Kekalainen to make more impactful trades before the NHL’s February 4 Olympic roster freeze and March 6 trade deadline. Rumored targets include St. Louis Blues star Robert Thomas, Calgary Flames’ Nazem Kadri, or defenseman Zach Whitecloud, recently acquired by the Flames but potentially available for a trade. Buffalo could also look to add Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson, a star center, or winger Jake DeBrusk to boost their offense, as previously discussed.

In addition, the Sabers recently extended young winger Josh Doan’s contract, a move seen as a gamble but a beneficial one for the franchise, which should be motivated to reward its current players for their efforts. Fans are right to expect the front office to seize opportunities and make bold moves, especially given the team’s long history of underperformance. The high-profile acquisition of Kiefer Sherwood by the San Jose Sharks signals the kind of cost that Buffalo might expect to pay for a significant upgrade—implying that sitting on the sidelines isn’t an option for a team eager to make progress.

Though big trades carry inherent risks, embracing bold moves could be the key for the Sabers to turn their fortunes around. The sooner they can land a top-tier player in a major deal, the better positioned they’ll be to improve and compete for the playoffs.

Fan Take: This news underscores the importance of aggressive front-office moves in hockey—fans long for teams to make bold decisions that could finally lead to a playoff return. For the sport, it highlights how strategic trades can revitalize franchises and keep the NHL competitive and exciting.
