Three Diamonds Farm’s Anegada, expertly guided by jockey Rafael Hernandez, secured victory in the $200,000 John B. Connally Turf Cup at Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday. The four-year-old Cadet gelding paced himself early to settle in fifth place during the mile-and-a-half race, staying close to the leaders with 400 meters remaining before responding strongly down the stretch to edge out pacesetter President by one length.

The race, run on a course rated as having a good yield, was completed by Anegada in 2:34.10, rewarding bettors with a payout of $18.40. While President held onto second place, the crowd favorite Truly Quality rallied from sixth to claim third in a field of eight older horses.

This win marked trainer Mike Maker’s 10th Connally Turf Cup victory, tying a record in the event’s history. Anegada’s impressive form has been building since his Dec. 27 win in the 1 1/8-mile Last Hurray at Turfway Park. Saturday’s success was his third stakes title, including a previous Hawthorn Derby win in early October. His overall record now stands at 4 wins, 2 seconds, and 3 thirds from 15 starts, with lifetime earnings reaching $437,539.

Foaled in Kentucky, Anegada was bred by Leonard Sapchak, out of the mare Love Cove by Not for Love.

Fan Take: Anegada’s strategic win highlights the enduring excitement of turf racing and the skill involved in jockey tactics and training. For horse racing enthusiasts, this victory not only cements Mike Maker’s legacy but also signals the rise of a contender who could shape future elite turf competitions.
