Petr Yan Signals Possibility of Sean O’Malley Rematch After Rival’s UFC 324 Victory

The first UFC event of 2026 showcased two major bantamweight fights, gaining extra spotlight after the women’s bantamweight title bout was canceled. This shift promoted Sean O’Malley to the co-main event slot at UFC 326.

On January 24th, “Suga” faced a high-pressure night, looking to rebound from back-to-back losses against Merab Dvalishvili. O’Malley ended his drought by securing a three-round win over Song Yadong, marking his first triumph since March 2024. This victory not only put him back on the winners’ list but also positioned him as a strong contender for another championship shot.

Meanwhile, fellow bantamweight Umar Nurmagomedov, who also won that weekend, expressed support for O’Malley’s potential next title run. This paves the way for Dvalishvili to possibly have a trilogy fight against Petr Yan, who lost the belt in December. However, given O’Malley’s past clashes with Yan and his return to the scene after UFC 324, the title picture is becoming increasingly tantalizing.

Yan responded to O’Malley’s win with a sarcastic comment on social media, hinting at the significance of the fight but leaving open who he’ll face next. “No Mercy” stated that he doesn’t pick his opponents, implying the UFC will decide whether Dvalishvili or O’Malley steps up next for the title.

As for O’Malley himself, he’s aware of the competition and acknowledges Dvalishvili’s rightful place in line for another title shot. Speaking post-UFC 324, O’Malley admitted he’d be “horrified” if he missed out on another opportunity to fight for the bantamweight crown, emphasizing his strong desire to reclaim the title.

Fan Take: This development injects fresh excitement into the bantamweight division, promising high-stakes matchups that will captivate fans. The potential for intense rivalries and trilogy bouts not only fuels the championship narrative but also pushes the sport’s competitiveness to new heights.
