Australian Open 2026: Coco Gauff advances to quarterfinals, Lerner Tien upsets Daniil Medvedev

Coco Gauff has had several deep runs at the Australian Open in the past, but she has never won the tournament. But this year could be different as Gauff continues her push towards winning her first-ever Australian Open title on Sunday.

It was not an easy task for Gauff, who is ranked third in the rankings, as she had to push past Karolina Muchova to get the job done. The women’s No. 19 gave Gauff some trouble during the match, but not enough to cause her to be thrown out of the match. Gauff won 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, defeating Muchova and advancing to the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year.

This win bodes very well for Gauff, as she continues to win every event she beats Muchova.

After a promising showing at the Australian Open early in her career, Gauff has inched closer to winning the tournament in recent years. She reached the semifinals in 2024 and the quarterfinals in 2025.

It will be difficult for Gauff to return to the semifinals this time around, as she will face Elina Svitolina on Tuesday. The two have faced off three times in the past, with Gauff winning two of those meetings.

Svitolina defeated Mila Andreeva on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals.

Lerner Tien advances to U.S. men’s team

Lerner Tien faced a difficult task on Sunday. With victory, Tien will advance to the Australian Open quarter-finals for the first time in his career. But the task was not easy, as he needed to defeat three-time finalist Daniil Medvedev to reach that goal.

But Tien proved up to the task, defeating the better-ranked Medvedev with a straight sets victory (6-4, 6-0, 6-3). With this win, Tien became the youngest player to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open since 2015.

Tien, 20, will look to continue his momentum on Tuesday when he takes on No. 3 ranked Alexander Zverev.

Zverev overtook Francisco Cerundolo on Sunday. On the men’s side, Alex de Minaur defeated Alexander Bublik to advance to the quarterfinals.
