Arsenal failed to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League, with Matheus Cunha stepping up as a key player in Manchester United’s 3-2 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

After wins against fellow title contenders Manchester City and Aston Villa, Mikel Arteta’s team felt the pressure, appearing tense during the match. Ultimately, they were punished by United’s precise finishing.

Arsenal initially took the lead in the 29th minute through an unexpected own goal from Lisandro Martinez, who deflected Martin Odegaard’s shot into his own net.

However, errors began to surface in Arsenal’s play, notably when Brian Mbeumo intercepted a misplaced pass from Martin Zubimendi in the 37th minute, skillfully rounding David Raya to score his 50th goal in the Premier League.

Patrick Dorg then gave United the lead just five minutes into the second half, combining effectively with Fernandes before striking a remarkable shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and crossed the line.

As Arsenal sought to respond, Arteta made four substitutions, but Senne Lamence missed a chance to capitalize on Bukayo Saka’s effort, leading to Mikel Merino finding the net from a corner.

Cunha, who struggled to clear Merino’s shot off the line, made a stunning impact in the 87th minute with a long-range strike into the bottom right corner.

United continued their impressive form under Michael Carrick, climbing to fourth in the standings, while Arsenal’s lead at the top remains at four points.

2 – This is the second instance at the Emirates where Arsenal has conceded two or more goals from outside the box in a Premier League game:

Data report: Are title nerves causing Arsenal’s lapses?

This match marked the first time Arsenal conceded three goals in a game since December 2023, breaking their streak of 121 consecutive matches without allowing more than one goal. While they started strong, a mistake from Zvimendi provided United a chance to press forward, leading to goals from Dorg and Cunha that secured their win.

In fact, Arsenal has committed more mistakes leading to goals against in two of their last four Premier League matches than throughout their first 19 of the season. On the flip side, United became the first visiting team since October 2008 to score multiple goals from distance against Arsenal at the Emirates, further showcasing their attacking prowess.

Despite Arsenal attempting 15 shots compared to United’s 10, the latter significantly capitalized on their chances from range, achieving an Expected Goals (xG) figure of 0.73 compared to Arsenal’s 1.2.

Fan Take: This match is a crucial reminder of the intense pressure in the Premier League, particularly for title contenders like Arsenal. As they navigate the challenges of maintaining their lead, fans can anticipate a thrilling race for the title that highlights the unpredictable nature of soccer.
