Sean O’Malley Might Challenge Conor McGregor’s Rules to Secure a White House Fight After UFC 324

Sean O’Malley has clearly set his sights on what’s next in his career. The former UFC bantamweight champion achieved his first victory in a main numbered event since April 2024, securing a win against Song Yadong at UFC 324 in Las Vegas. This triumph helped him rebound from consecutive defeats by Merab Dvalishvili and revitalized his chances of reclaiming the title. Following his latest success, O’Malley remains focused on a rematch with the reigning champion, Petr Yan, but fulfilling that ambition might require him to reconsider a position he firmly held five years ago.

Prior to UFC 324, O’Malley had already initiated legal action to secure a spot on the UFC White House card scheduled for June of this year. High-profile fighters such as the legendary Conor McGregor, who has not competed since a leg injury in 2021, are also vying for inclusion on the 2026 card. McGregor’s potential return could force O’Malley to adjust his approach toward sharing fight cards with prominent Irish athletes. Previously, O’Malley expressed a desire to compete away from the spotlight that follows cards headlined by McGregor, explaining that no matter how well he performs, the media attention would largely remain focused on McGregor. Notably, O’Malley’s last impressive outing was a Fight of the Night win against Chris Moutinho during the UFC 264 undercard, which supported the McGregor-Poirier trilogy fight.

Meanwhile, UFC President Dana White has declined to guarantee McGregor a fight at the upcoming White House event. White recently denied Jon Jones’ request for reinstatement, citing concerns about Jones’ reliability for headlining the card. Despite this, White acknowledged his good relationship with McGregor and confirmed that the former champ is a strong candidate for the White House fight, but did not confirm any concrete plans. White’s mixed signals suggest that while McGregor’s return remains a possibility, it is not yet set in stone.

Fan Take: This news is a significant moment for fight fans as it marks Sean O’Malley’s reemergence as a genuine title contender, promising an exciting bantamweight rivalry ahead. Furthermore, the uncertainty surrounding Conor McGregor’s UFC return adds an intriguing layer of anticipation and speculation, which could invigorate the sport’s fanbase and elevate the profile of upcoming UFC events.
