Just one year after back-to-back 4-13 campaigns, the New England Patriots are heading to the Super Bowl.

In his first season with the club, head coach Mike Vrabel became the eighth head coach in NFL history to guide a team to the Super Bowl in Year 1, and he’s the fifth to do so after having played for that same franchise. Quarterback Drake Maye — at 23 — is the youngest QB to appear in a Super Bowl since Dan Marino in 1984.

FOX Sports Research examined how unusual this Super Bowl matchup is. Highlights:

1. The Patriots and 49ers are the only franchises to reach the Super Bowl with multiple QBs who were in their first or second NFL seasons.
2. The 2025 Patriots are only the second team (after the 2000 Ravens) to make the Super Bowl after three playoff games while surrendering 26 or fewer total points.
3. New England allowed just 26 points across its three postseason games; only the 2000 Ravens gave up fewer (16) in their three playoff contests en route to the Super Bowl.
4. Maye is the youngest QB to play in a Super Bowl since the 1984 season (Dan Marino) and the second-youngest ever; one more win would make him the youngest quarterback in NFL history to win a Super Bowl.
5. Maye and Tom Brady are the only quarterbacks in Patriots history to lead the team to the Super Bowl within their first two seasons.
6. Maye is just the fourth quarterback since 2000 to win each of his first three career playoff starts.
7. He is the first QB to defeat three top-five defenses in a single postseason (Chargers, Texans, Broncos).
8. Maye is the first quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger in 2005 to start a conference championship game on the road before turning 24.
9. Vrabel tied George Seifert for the most wins by an NFL head coach in his first season when playoff victories are included.
10. He’s the first person in NFL history to win a conference title both as a player and as a coach for the same franchise.
11. Vrabel is the eighth coach to take a team to the Super Bowl in his first season (joining Don McCafferty, Red Miller, George Seifert, Bill Callahan, Jon Gruden, Jim Caldwell and Gary Kubiak).
12. He’s also the fifth coach who reached the Super Bowl as a head coach after having played for that same team (joining Tom Flores, Mike Ditka, Gary Kubiak and Doug Pederson).

Fan Take: This run matters because it reinforces that rapid rebuilds are possible and that young quarterbacks can carry teams deep into January, changing how franchises approach the draft and development. Vrabel’s success also highlights the value of hiring leaders with strong ties to a franchise, a trend that could influence coaching hires across the league.
