Eddie Hearn’s cheeky comeback to Dana White’s debut boxing event: “I’d wash out”

Eddie Hearn held back from strongly promoting Zuffa Boxing’s inaugural event on Friday night but still managed to deliver some pointed remarks in his signature manner.

Dana White made his notable entry into boxing promotion as Callum Walsh secured a victory over Carlos Ocampo in a modestly spotlighted main event at Meta Apex on the same evening. Paramount Broadcast was praised for its quality and the overall Las Vegas setting.

Despite the praise, Eddie Hearn voiced skepticism about the event, suggesting that if he had organized the identical fight card at that venue, boxing fans would have harshly criticized him. Interestingly, Hearn admitted he hadn’t actually watched the event, attributing this to not having a Paramount subscription.

Dana White himself was the harshest critic of Zuffa Boxing’s debut, acknowledging that the promotion had significant improvements to make. Contrary to expectations that Hearn might join the criticism, he chose to avoid escalating the media rivalry and instead made a few cheeky comments via IFL TV, indicating he probably wasn’t very impressed with the show.

Hearn reflected, “I had a following thanks to things like Zuffa, but I was wrong. If I had put together that card, I’d be under fire for a month. But at least they’re getting started.” He also noted the promotion’s focus on long-term fighter development rather than expecting instant results and expressed curiosity about the tension over recognizing championship belts, highlighting that they headlined a WBC world title fight. Despite all this, he confessed to only watching Callum Walsh highlights, jokingly quoting that Max Kellerman compared Walsh’s performance to Roy Jones Jr., implying it must have been good.

Regarding talent acquisition, rumors suggested Zuffa Boxing might sign two-division world champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez. However, Matchroom Boxing held a contractual matching period, giving them priority. Hearn confirmed that they had matched the offer and were in a strong position to retain ‘Bam’, promising to announce their next steps soon.

Fan Take: This development highlights the intense competition in combat sports promotion as major players like Eddie Hearn and Dana White expand their influence beyond their traditional domains. For fans, this could lead to more exciting matchups and innovation in boxing promotions, potentially elevating the sport’s global appeal.
