  • Steven Gerrard open to return to Liverpool
  • Reds already plan for life without slots

TEAMtalk reports that Liverpool are considering a shock move to bring Steven Gerrard back to Anfield as caretaker manager should the club decide to sack disgraced head coach Arn Slott.

After impressing in his debut season, the Dutch manager is now fighting to keep his job as Liverpool endure one of the most disappointing title defenses in Premier League history.

Slott’s second season was marked by inconsistency, poor defensive structure and a lack of discernible intensity, issues brutally brought to light in Liverpool’s recent loss to Bournemouth, which once again exposed the fragility and disorganization of the team that lifted the Premier League trophy last season.

Slott remains credited with leading Liverpool to early success, but his patience is wearing thin.

Steven Gerrard open to return to Liverpool

According to reports, Reds bosses have admitted that Gerrard is a “real possibility” if an interim appointment is needed before the end of the 2025/26 season.

Remarkably, the report claims that Gerrard has already approved the short-term position and has informed the club that he is ready to take over immediately if required.

Gerrard remains one of Liverpool’s most iconic figures and is respected by supporters for his impressive playing career at Anfield.

His managerial journey has been mixed, with a successful spell at Rangers but an unconvincing spell in the short Premier League at Aston Villa, but his links with the club and respectability within Liverpool’s culture make him an attractive stabilizing option in the eyes of decision-makers.

The club’s hierarchy has now accepted the need for change, with growing concerns over morale, tactical fragmentation and lack of direction.

Liverpool know they cannot afford to let their pace slip any further, especially with Champions League qualification at stake.

Whether the slot survives the coming weeks could depend entirely on the outcome. But even if the ax falls, a familiar face may be waiting in the wings.
