According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United are exploring the possibility of making a move for Atalanta’s highly-rated midfielder Ederson in late January.
The Magpies are considering whether to accelerate their pursuit of reinforcements before the deadline closes as manager Eddie Howe deals with an injury crisis in his midfield.
Howe’s midfield has taken a huge hit in recent weeks. Bruno Guimarães missed Newcastle’s 2-0 loss to Aston Villa due to an ankle problem, while Joelinton and Sandro Tonali also picked up bruises in the home defeat earlier in the week.
One of Atalanta’s standout performers this season, Ederson has long been admired by some of Europe’s top clubs.
Ederson had a good performance in Serie A with Atalanta.
The Brazilian’s combination of energy, ball-winning ability and box-to-box versatility made him a key figure for Atalanta.
Ederson’s impressive performances and development in Serie A have established him as one of Italy’s hottest midfield talents.
But Newcastle are not the only club chasing the 26-year-old. Atletico Madrid are also in the race, especially after losing Conor Gallagher, who interestingly was their target when Tottenham signed him earlier this month.
Diego Simeone believes Ederson is the perfect fit for his intense and combative midfield system.
Newcastle United to face Man United
Meanwhile, Manchester United are monitoring the situation closely. With Casemiro set to leave this summer and the club looking to revamp their midfield, Ederson has emerged as a likely candidate.
Reports in Italy suggest that several Premier League scouts have been following him for several months.
Despite the growing interest, Atalanta are reluctant to sell their star midfielder in January.
Selling him in late January would make it difficult for the Italian giants to sign his replacement.
For Newcastle, the next few days will decide whether or not to push through with injury.
With key midfielders sidelined and pressure mounting to remain competitive in both the Premier League and European campaigns, the temptation to take the plunge is growing for Ederson.
