  • ‘Dominant’ Onyeka could definitely sign for Coventry

Coventry City are currently leading the race to sign the 41-cap international player and have been negotiating an agreement.

Coventry lost 2-1 to Norwich City at Carrow Road on Monday night but remain at the top of the Championship with 58 points from 29 games.

Sky Blues are eight points behind third-placed Ipswich Town and in a strong position to win promotion to the Premier League for the first time since 2001, so manager Frank Lampard won’t need to make any major changes to his squad this month, but there could be some new signings before the February 2 deadline.

Mr Lampard said: “So right now, we don’t have a clear goal of what this position or that person is going to be, but at the same time, as long as the window is open, some option could come to us and it clearly makes us better, so we’re not closing the window door so to speak yet.”

Last week, another update on the central midfielder’s signing was announced as it was revealed that Lampard’s side had begun a search for Brentford’s Frank Onyeka.

Sky Sports reports that Coventry are currently leading the race to sign Onyeka, who is represented by the same agent as Lampard, and are already negotiating a deal.

The Brentford midfielder is thought to be likely to leave the Bees before the transfer deadline on February 2, with the Sky Blues discussing a loan move or a permanent move.

Birmingham City and Sheffield United are also in the race to sign the 28-year-old, but the Championship leaders currently sit in pole position in the race to sign him.

‘Dominant’ Onyeka could definitely sign for Coventry

The Nigerian, described by former manager Thomas Frank as a “dominating” midfielder, has struggled to feature for Brentford this season, making just six Premier League appearances, but he made headlines at AFCON.

The central midfielder was particularly impressive in the semi-final against Morocco, showing off his defensive qualities by making three interceptions and two tackles, winning six of their nine encounters.

The Benin City-born maestro has established himself at international level, winning 41 caps for Nigeria, and has extensive experience in the Premier League, making 75 appearances in the top flight.

Onyeka could be a solid addition to Coventry’s squad as they battle for promotion, and his top-level experience could make him a useful addition next season if Lampard’s side manage to reach the Premier League.
