USA midfielder Malik Tillman netted an unconventional yet clever goal, giving Bayer Leverkusen an early advantage in their Champions League clash against Villarreal. He followed it up with a second goal, extending the lead to 2-0.

Leverkusen started the match in 20th place among 36 teams and required a victory to ensure a position in the top 24 for a chance to progress to the knockout rounds, as well as to improve their seeding ahead of Friday’s play-off draw.

In the 12th minute, Tillman entered the penalty area and intercepted a pass from Villarreal goalkeeper Arnau Tenas as he attempted to clear the ball from six yards. The deflection resulted in an unexpected goal that gave Leverkusen a 1-0 lead.

At just 23 years old, Tillman was nearly losing his balance with his back to the goal when the ball rolled in. His second goal came in the 35th minute, delivered with a low right-footed shot from just outside the penalty box.

Associated Press reported.

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer fans as it highlights Tillman’s potential and skill at a crucial moment in the tournament. His performance could be a turning point not only for Leverkusen’s season but also for his burgeoning career on the international stage.
