Tommy Fleetwood’s go-to drill is simple. He picks up an alignment stick, aligns it with the shaft angle, and inserts it into a device called a swing plane perfector. This gives you visual feedback on what it looks like “on the plane” while you practice.

“[Using the Swing Plane Perfector]basically allows me to address shaft angles, which is probably what I struggle with the most early in my career,” he said. “They keep me happy on the plane.”

It is difficult to argue with this result. Last year, Fleetwood moved up to third in the OWGR, won his first PGA Tour event and captured the FedEx Cup crown.

Not too shabby.

But while Fleetwood’s go-to drill is an excellent reinforcement; his Trying to swing on your own can be disastrous. In the video below, GOLF Top 100 teacher Cameron McCormick explains why.

Why you shouldn’t try Fleetwood drills

Fleetwood’s go-to drill is a great shaft plane visual for high level players. However, for the majority of recreational golfers, it ends up doing more harm than good.

“It’s good for the pros,” McCormick said. “For 98 percent of golfers, it’s cancer.”

As you know, recreational golfers rarely have the same swing flaws as professionals, so it would be foolish to blindly copy their practices. In this case, Fleetwood uses an alignment stick to help him visualize the proper swing plane and get under that position.

Recreational golfers usually have the opposite problem. They usually come too far from the location. outside and swing over the top.

“It’s just more over-the-top swings and heeling,” McCormick says.

what to do instead

Grab a few alignment sticks and place one on the ground below your target line, and stick the other stick out of the ground at about knee height parallel to your target line at a 45-degree angle, with the tip directly above the ball. Next, take your third alignment stick and stick it into the ground in front of the ball at a 45-degree angle that splits the difference between your target line and your lead hip.

“Then you just swing and miss the stick,” McCormick said. “You’ll be guessing the draw for days.”
