Manager Tim Sherwood has taken aim at a “disgraceful” refereeing decision that could have led to Tottenham Hotspur’s loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.
Tottenham beat Frankfurt to advance to the last 16
The Paris Saint-Germain loanee was in good form and, despite his late arrival in Germany, scored the decisive opener against his former club in the 47th minute, before Dominic Solanke added a second to ease the pressure on underdog manager Thomas Frank, helping Tottenham finish the league in a comfortable fourth place.
Kolo Muani decided to play against his old club and almost scored the opening goal in his first appearance, despite being booed loudly.
Penetrating down the left, his cross was spilled by Kaua Santos and Xavi Simons fired home, but the away celebrations were cut short when Destiny Udogi was adjudged to have committed a foul in the build-up.
Tottenham tried to rebuild, but results elsewhere saw the Premier League club drop to ninth in the league, shortly after Joao Parinha’s header went wide.
Tottenham make approach to Bayern Munich star in crucial ‘coming hours’
The Spurs have just started contacting him about a deal.
Chances arose one after another, but Udogi somehow failed to touch Kolo Muani’s cross and threatened to score, but a smart turn allowed Wilson Odbert to fire a shot from 20 yards that hit the inside of the post.
Still, the opener arrived quickly. And just 66 seconds into the second period.
The set-piece went well and a short free-kick created space for Simmons, who chipped in to Cristian Romero and his header was converted from close range by Kolo Muani. It was Kolo Muani’s third goal in 24 appearances for Tottenham.
Then came Solanke’s job from the bench. The forward ran through and smashed the ball into the bottom corner to secure his fifth win in the competition, securing fourth place and ensuring Spurs a place in the last 16.
Manager Sherwood slams referee’s ‘disgraceful’ decision
Speaking on Sky Sports, former manager Sherwood called the decision a “disgraceful” decision.
“It’s a shameful decision to exclude Tottenham’s goal. It would never have been excluded in the Premier League.”
In the end, Spurs got the job done despite a controversial refereeing decision, but Frank will be well aware that he needs all the luck he can get in north London right now.
