Guard or Mariners? 3 Ideal MLB Free Agents to Target if Luis Arraez Departs the Padres

Are you looking for a three-time batting champion who can handle two positions and is currently in his prime? Meet Luis Arraez!

Currently with the San Diego Padres, Arraez is primarily a first baseman but brings significant experience at second base as well, making him one of MLB’s top free agents still on the market. With Ryan O’Hearn departing through free agency, Arraez could seamlessly slide back into the Padres’ corner infield role, although Jake Cronenworth may also return as the everyday first baseman. At 28 years old, Arraez also offers the possibility to contribute in the outfield.

Here are three teams that would be excellent fits for Arraez if he decides to leave San Diego.

The Washington Nationals, boasting promising young players like James Wood, CJ Abrams, and Daylen Lyle, lack a veteran presence to support their youth. Arraez would be a savvy addition for new manager Blake Butera, likely stepping in as Washington’s starting first baseman given the team’s absence of a proven player at that position after recently drafting veteran Nathaniel Rowe. Positioned near the top of the lineup, Arraez, an elite contact hitter who seldom strikes out, would boost an offense that ranked 21st in MLB hits last year.

Additionally, having begun his career primarily as a second baseman, Arraez’s defensive versatility means he could cover middle infield spots if needed, such as during Luis Garcia’s absence, or play first base regularly. His skill set as a solid left-handed hitter increases the Nationals’ lineup depth. It’s possible Washington might opt for a short-term contract for Arraez while acquiring prospects to bolster their system. However, Arraez might prefer to join a team competing for a championship.

For the Seattle Mariners, the focus is on immediate success, and Arraez fits that vision perfectly.

A two-time Silver Slugger, Arraez would presumably start at second base because Seattle locked up first baseman Josh Naylor with a five-year deal. The Mariners excelled at power hitting in 2025, ranking third in MLB with 238 home runs but struggled in contact, ranking sixth in strikeouts with 1,446. Arraez, who has only struck out 215 times, would improve Seattle’s ability to make contact and generate baserunners.

As the National League’s hit leader for the past two seasons, Arraez would provide a reliable presence in the Mariners’ lineup, setting the table for others and creating opportunities on the bases. While young players like Cole Young or Leo Rivas may compete for the second base spot, signing Arraez on a short-term deal wouldn’t prevent their growth, especially since Rivas serves as a versatile utility player. The main limitation would be Arraez’s defined role at second base, but he could also contribute as a designated hitter if necessary.

Finally, the Cleveland Guardians also present a compelling option.

While the Guardians have had solid middle infielders like Breian Rocchio, Daniel Schneemann, and Gabriel Arias, none have made the offensive splash that Arraez offers. A three-time All-Star, he would complement speedy hitter Steven Kwan to form an exciting duo that could generate more run-scoring chances for stars Jose Ramirez and Kyle Mansardo. Arraez could play either first or second base for Cleveland, though he’ll probably start at second since the team might move Mansardo to a full-time first base role.

Despite finishing last in hits (1,199), ranking 29th in batting average (.226) and on-base percentage (.296), and 28th in RBIs (643) last season, the Guardians still captured the AL Central title and came within one win of the AL Division Series. Adding Arraez would strengthen their offense without hindering the development of 2024 No. 1 overall pick Travis Bazana, as Arraez could shift between first base and designated hitter duties.

Fan Take: Luis Arraez’s versatility and consistent hitting make him one of the most valuable free agents this offseason, and his destination could reshape the offensive firepower for several contenders. Baseball fans should watch closely, as Arraez’s next move might not only impact team dynamics but also elevate the excitement and competitiveness of the league in the coming years.
