Andy Murray, early stages of Novak Djokovic end coaching partnership

Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic ended their coaching partnership early after working together for six months.

Djokovic, who is chasing Wimbledon’s eighth title, will not be coached by Murray following the poor results this season.

“I would like to thank Coach Andy. I would like to thank all the effort, enjoyment and support you have done on and off the court over the past six months. I really enjoyed deepening our friendship together,” Djokovic said.

Murray, who started coaching Djokovic in November, added:

“I hope Novak is the best for the rest of the season.”

Djokovic, who won 25 of his 36 matches against Murray, said he appreciated his previous rivals’ hard work and support with short spells.

He reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January, before injuries ended his campaign. He made the Miami Open Final in March, but his bid for the 100th tour-level title ended with the defeat of Jakub Mensik.

The Serb, who turned 38 three days before the start of his second Grand Slam, has been severely cut off since Miami’s defeat and was beaten in the opening match of the Masters Tournament last month in Monte Carlo and Madrid.

He was expected to launch a clay campaign in Rome before returning to Paris. There he won Olympic Gold last year, but skipped the ongoing Italian Open without giving a reason.

Djokovic accepted the wild card for the Geneva Open on May 18-24.

Information from Reuters contributed to this report.
