Mets or Orioles? Top 3 MLB Free Agents That Perfectly Match Former Astros LHP Framber Valdez’s Skillset

One of the most notable starting pitchers available during this offseason is left-hander Framber Valdez, formerly with the Houston Astros. Despite remaining unsigned for reasons unknown, Valdez has demonstrated that he is a reliable top-tier starter who pitches deep into games and could be the ace for many MLB teams.

Here are three prime teams that would be an excellent fit for Valdez as a free agent.

The San Francisco Giants, led by President Buster Posey, have shown a readiness to make bold moves, exemplified by recent acquisitions like Willie Adams and Rafael Devers. Valdez would be a smart signing for them, aligning well with their current direction. Although the Giants have added veteran right-handers Adrian Hauser and Tyler Marr, neither is expected to lead the playoff rotation, and with Justin Verlander entering free agency, Valdez’s sinker, curveball, and changeup arsenal would strengthen their staff. He is one of the top left-handed pitchers in the league, bringing valuable experience to a rotation that ranked 17th in ERA (4.10) and tied for 23rd in WHIP (1.34) last year. Competing in the tough National League West against the Los Angeles —who continue stacking an impressive roster with stars like Kyle Tucker—the Giants may not match the ’ offensive firepower but can counter it on the mound. A rotation led by Valdez and Logan Webb would give new manager Tony Vitello a solid foundation. While prospects like Landen Loop and Hayden Birdsong show promise, adding a seasoned southpaw will elevate San Francisco’s chances. Still, Valdez’s presence may only secure a wild-card spot rather than make the Giants serious National League pennant contenders.

The Baltimore Orioles, who have aggressively boosted their offense by signing Pete Alonso and acquiring Taylor Ward, need a significant upgrade in their rotation to reach the playoffs again. Valdez, at 32, would fill the gap left by Corbin Burnes’ departure, as Baltimore’s starting staff finished 24th in ERA (4.65) and 21st in WHIP (1.32) last season. Leading the American League in innings pitched in 2022 with 201.1, Valdez is known for going deep into games and performing well under postseason pressure, having started 16 playoff games and delivering a 1.44 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in four postseason starts during their 2022 World Series win. His reliability could make him the centerpiece of Baltimore’s pitching staff. Paired with lefty Trevor Rogers, who had an outstanding 1.81 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 18 starts last season, Valdez would significantly strengthen the rotation. Given the current health uncertainties of others like Dean Kramer and Cade Povich, his addition would reduce pressure on their development and help sustain Rogers’ strong form. After a 96-win campaign in 2023-2024, the Orioles clearly need Valdez’s leadership to become legitimate championship contenders.

For the New York Mets, Valdez is exactly the missing piece they need. Despite adding talented infielders like Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco, as well as reliable relievers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver, the Mets still lack a proven ace pitcher. Valdez would fill that crucial role perfectly. He would bring durability and quality to a rotation ranked 27th in innings pitched (796) last year, offering certainty with no doubts about his ability or development. While Kodai Senga, Nolan McLean, and Clay Holmes have shown promise, relying solely on them doesn’t guarantee postseason success. Last season, the Mets had the best record in MLB at 45-23 but surprisingly missed the playoffs, highlighting the need for a solid starting pitcher like Valdez. Given their rotation’s mediocre stats—18th in ERA (4.13) and tied for 26th in WHIP (1.35)—Valdez represents a clear upgrade and a stabilizing force.

Fan Take: Framber Valdez hitting the open market is a major storyline that could reshape several teams’ futures, especially for playoff hopefuls needing a dependable ace. His signing could tip the balance of power in competitive divisions, making the upcoming MLB season even more exciting for fans eager to see how these pitching additions impact the race for the postseason.
