Cooper Flagg Stuns with Spectacular Growth in Iconic Rookie Showdown Against Con Knuppel

On Thursday night, former Duke teammates Cooper Flagg and Con Knuppel faced each other for the first time in their professional careers, delivering a memorable performance. The Charlotte Hornets narrowly edged out the Dallas Mavericks 123-121, with Knuppel scoring 34 points on an impressive 62.5% shooting. However, Flagg’s individual effort stole the spotlight—at just 19 years old, he poured in 49 points on 20-of-29 shooting, setting a new NBA record for most points scored in a game by a teenager and breaking the Mavericks’ rookie scoring record.

The duel lived up to expectations, with Knuppel draining a three-pointer and Flagg leading Dallas’s offense. Together, they combined for 83 points, marking them as the third-highest-scoring rookie duo in NBA history, trailing only the duos of Pete Maravich & Nate Archibald in 1971 (91 points) and Johnny Green & Wilt Chamberlain in 1960 (85 points).

Both rookies are strong contenders for Rookie of the Year this season. Despite Knuppel’s impressive play, Flagg currently holds a slight edge for the award. Knuppel, now 20, has demonstrated not only his deadly three-point shooting but also an advanced ability to drive to the basket, along with intelligent off-ball movement and quality passing that creates better shot opportunities.

Knuppel benefits from playing alongside LaMelo Ball, who commands defensive focus and often frees up Knuppel to operate from the perimeter. This was evident Thursday, as 24 of his 34 points came from beyond the arc, alongside nine assists, including a perfect long-range shot to Miles Bridges.

In contrast, Flagg battled through relentless contact and showcased a wide array of scoring techniques—including floaters, mid-range jumpers, and three-pointers—to keep his injury-depleted team competitive. Every time he touched the ball, Flagg created opportunities despite facing tougher defensive pressure. This grit is reflected in the fact he was the only Mavericks starter with a positive plus-minus rating and the only Dallas player to surpass 20 points in the game.

The Mavericks, dealing with significant injuries to key players like Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, have given their No. 1 pick Flagg a larger role in the offense. After a slow start to the season, Flagg has since come into his own, dominating as many expected.

Looking at his monthly statistics:

MonthGames PlayedPoints Per GameFG%Rebounds Per GameAssists Per Game
October513.441%6.22.8
November1517.847.7%6.73.7
December1323.551.6%6.24.8
January1119.647.2%6.74.6

Although January was a bit off his peak form, Flagg’s 49-point game proves he isn’t slowing down. He still averages nearly 20 points per game on 48% shooting—a remarkable efficiency for a rookie. Notably, nearly 46% of his shots come from the midrange, a trait usually seen in the league’s most elite scorers.

Beyond his offense, Flagg’s defense is what truly sets him apart. He possesses an excellent sense of timing for blocks, can guard multiple positions, and is already a reliable defender on the perimeter. His size and quick footwork make it tough for opponents to get past him, preventing him from looking overwhelmed even against smaller, faster guards.

Thursday’s matchup showcased two top-tier rookies shining in what promises to be an exciting Rookie of the Year race. Flagg is currently favored at -500 on DraftKings, but Knuppel (+340) remains a strong contender with months of competition ahead.

Fan Take: This thrilling battle between Flagg and Knuppel highlights a new generation of NBA talent ready to take the league by storm. Their extraordinary performances not only offer fans electrifying moments but also signal a bright future for basketball with dynamic scoring and versatile defense taking center stage.
