On January 15, the Iowa Horse Racing and Gambling Commission (IRGC) gave the green light to a new three-year horse racing agreement involving Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino, the Iowa Horse Racing Benevolent and Protective Association (IA HBPA), and the Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association (IQHRA).

This partnership outlines a 76-day mixed racing schedule featuring both thoroughbreds and quarter horses at Prairie Meadows, aiming to sustain a unified effort among the three groups. The agreement ensures long-term stability and gives jockeys, producers, and racing operations greater planning confidence, while reinforcing Prairie Meadows’ status as a leading racetrack in the Midwest.

According to the deal, the racing season will kick off on Kentucky Derby Day and conclude on the last weekend of September, highlighting both thoroughbred and quarter horse events throughout the season. This format broadens participation and appeals to a wide fan base.

Brian Ohorilko, President and CEO of Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino, highlighted the significance of the agreement for both the track and Iowa’s horse racing landscape. “This three-year pact marks a major advancement for Prairie Meadows and horse racing in Iowa,” Ohorilko said. “We look forward to collaborating with IA HBPA and IQHRA over the next three years to deliver consistency, enhance our racing program, and build greater excitement around mixed racing.”

IA HBPA Chairman Dave McShane praised the cooperative spirit behind the agreement. “We’re glad to move ahead with this three-year deal and appreciate the commitment from Prairie Meadows and IQHRA in finalizing it,” McShane stated. “It creates stability for jockeys and allows all parties to focus on producing a successful 76-day meet that will benefit Iowa’s horse racing industry. We’re eager to continue partnering with Prairie Meadows and Quarter Horse representatives to grow this event.”

Tom Lepic, President of IQHRA, stressed how crucial the agreement is for Quarter Horse racing and the wider Iowa racing community. “The Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association thanks Prairie Meadows and IA HBPA for joining us in establishing this important three-year contract that promotes stability in Iowa horse racing and supports owners, trainers, and breeders regionally and beyond,” Lepic commented. “This 76-day series will enhance the racing experience for both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds and delight our passionate fans. We’re excited about the 2026 through 2028 seasons as we continue striving to make Iowa a top destination for horse ownership, breeding, and racing. We sincerely thank our partners at Prairie Meadows and IA HBPA.”

The agreement will apply to the 2026, 2027, and 2028 racing seasons at Prairie Meadows.
