The Athletics have reached a seven-year contract extension with shortstop Jacob Wilson worth $70 million, as confirmed by CBS Sports Head Jim Bowden. At just 23 years old, Wilson finished as the runner-up for the AL Rookie of the Year award last season, trailing only teammate Nick Kurtz. Over 125 games, Wilson posted impressive stats with a .311 batting average, .355 on-base percentage, and .444 slugging (OPS+ of 121), including 26 doubles, 13 home runs, 63 RBIs, five stolen bases, and a 3.0 WAR. He also earned a starting spot as the American League shortstop in the All-Star Game.

Originally set to become a free agent following the 2030 season, this extension secures Wilson’s services through 2032 by covering two additional years of potential free agency along with all remaining pre-arbitration and arbitration periods. This move follows closely on the heels of the Athletics signing left fielder Tyler Soderstrom to a separate seven-year, $86 million deal. Both signings signal the Athletics’ efforts to rebuild their roster after a major teardown before relocating from Oakland, with a hopeful future move to Las Vegas on the horizon. For now, the team will continue playing at a minor league stadium in Sacramento.

Last season, the Athletics finished with a 76-86 record, improving by seven wins from 2024. Despite the overall losing record, the team showed promise in the second half of the season, achieving winning records in July, August, and September, and posting a 35-29 record after the All-Star break.

Fan Take: This extension of Jacob Wilson highlights the Athletics’ commitment to building a strong core of young talent, which is exciting for baseball fans looking for fresh stars. Wilson’s growth and long-term presence could help reshape the competitive landscape and bring renewed energy to the sport as the Athletics prepare for their next chapter.
