Ben Jacobs has denied speculation that Liverpool are making an offer for Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries following Jeremy Frimpong’s recent injury.
Despite reports from Italy suggesting the Reds have made contact with the Nerazzurri, it appears Anfield officials may not be pursuing a move for the Dutch wing-back as the January transfer window enters its final hours.
The rumors gained attention after Liverpool’s defensive depth reached breaking point, but Jacobs’ latest update suggests the club are not looking elsewhere, or perhaps anywhere, before Monday’s deadline.
Ben Jacobs updates on Denzel Dumfries to Liverpool
Ben Jacobs clarified the situation on social media, quickly pouring cold water on the growing talk that Dumfries could be the solution to Liverpool’s right-back crisis.
“I was told there was nothing to do with Liverpool and Denzel Dumfries in January,” Jacobs posted on X.
The sacking came despite high-profile claims from Italian journalists, including Gianluca Di Marzio, who suggested Liverpool had contacted Inter to assess the possibility of signing the 29-year-old.
Inter Milan’s interest in Curtis Jones has fueled further speculation, with suggestions that Liverpool could strike a swap deal that could see Dumfries come to Anfield.
However, Dumfries is currently sidelined with his own fitness issues and is unlikely to return to the pitch until late February or March, so Liverpool are unlikely to pursue this as an emergency addition in January.
Liverpool’s right-back crisis
Regardless of Dumfries’ denials, the urgency to strengthen the defense at Anfield is real.
Arne Slott is currently living through a nightmare scenario on the right wing after a series of unfortunate setbacks.
Conor Bradley will miss the remainder of the 2026 season after sustaining a serious knee injury against Arsenal.
Jeremy Frimpong, a summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen, limped off just minutes into the 6-0 win over Qarabag in midweek. Slott admitted the injury was “not as bad as feared” but is expected to be out for several weeks.

Joe Gomez, a versatile defender who can also play at right-back, is also currently out with a hip problem, but is expected to return sooner than the other players.
With no suitable senior right-back available for the next game against Newcastle, Slott may be forced to play a makeshift back four with midfielders such as Wataru Endo or Dominik Szoboszlai.
The club continues to be alert to market opportunities, but Jacobs’ latest update says fans should not expect Dumfries to be at the AXA Training Center this winter.
