Veteran catcher JT Realmuto has decided to remain with the Philadelphia Phillies, agreeing to a three-year contract worth $45 million, according to a source familiar with the talks who spoke anonymously to The Associated Press on Friday. The deal, which has not yet been officially announced, includes potential yearly bonuses of $5 million.

Realmuto, a three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove recipient, made his choice about a month after designated hitter Kyle Schwarber committed to the Phillies with a five-year, $150 million deal. Turning 35 in March, Realmuto played in 132 games as a catcher last season and posted a .257 batting average with 12 home runs and 52 RBIs across 134 games, ranking him among the major league leaders. He was entering the final year of a five-year contract valued at $115.5 million.

Over his 12-year career spanning the Miami Marlins (2014-2018) and the Phillies, Realmuto has maintained a .270 batting average, hitting 180 home runs and accumulating 677 RBIs. This offseason, Philadelphia also secured deals with right-hander Brad Keller on a two-year, $22 million contract and outfielder Adris Garcia for one year at $10 million.

Reported by the Associated Press.

Fan Take:
JT Realmuto staying with the Phillies is a huge win for both the team and its fans, ensuring stability at a key position. His continued presence bolsters the Phillies’ chances for championship contention and highlights the team’s commitment to retaining top talent.
