Exciting Sneak Peek: Motown Matinee Spotlight on Yahoo Sports

Many are curious about how the Colorado Avalanche will respond to challenges after their remarkable streak of success starting this season. Following a tough stretch in January, the Avalanche have another opportunity to end the month positively, but they will face their long-standing rivals, the Detroit Red Wings, who have significantly improved over time.

Currently, the Avalanche hold a record of 35 wins, 8 losses, and 9 draws. They are set to face the Red Wings, who have a record of 32 wins, 17 losses, and 6 draws. The game is scheduled for 11:00 AM MST / 1:00 PM EST and will be broadcast nationally on ABC/ESPN in the United States and on SN+/SNE/SNO/SNP in Canada. Fans can also listen to the game on Altitude Sports Radio KKSE-FM 92.5.

This matchup marks the end of a four-game road trip for Colorado and kicks off a home-and-home series, with Detroit visiting Denver on Monday night to close out their season series at Ball Arena. The Avalanche recently suffered back-to-back losses against Ottawa and Montreal, where they scored a combined five goals but were outplayed overall. Despite feeling they played more competitively against Montreal than Ottawa, head coach Jared Bednar acknowledged that the team struggled both offensively and defensively, emphasizing the need for improvement in certain areas.

For Colorado, Brock Nelson has been a standout offensively, scoring four goals in three games, with 28 points ranking second on the team behind Nathan MacKinnon’s 38. MacKinnon has been without a goal since mid-January, as has Martin Nechas, highlighting some scoring droughts. Coach Bednar noted that while these players are creating chances, they haven’t been converting as well as usual.

In January, the Avalanche have a record of 5-6-2, and if they don’t secure a win today, it will be their first sub-.500 calendar month since October 2024. Despite recent struggles, they remain the top team in the Central Division, Western Conference, and the league overall. With only three games remaining before the Olympic break, their standings are not in serious jeopardy. Historically, the Avalanche have enjoyed success against Detroit, winning three of the last four regular-season matchups, including a recent 5-2 victory in March 2025.

The projected Colorado lineup features Artturi Lehkonen, Nathan MacKinnon, and Martin Nechas on offense; defense by Sam Malinsky, Cale Makar, and others; and between the pipes are Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgwood.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Red Wings are currently second in the Atlantic Division, just two points behind Tampa Bay. Though a playoff spot isn’t guaranteed, it’s increasingly likely they will clinch their first postseason appearance in nine years—a significant milestone during their 100th anniversary season.

Detroit has performed well in January, with a 6-2-2 record in their last 10 games. However, recent home stand results have been disappointing, with losses to the Kings and Capitals. Patrick Kane recently surpassed Mike Modano to become the NHL’s top American scorer, highlighting Detroit’s offensive talents. Alex DeBrincat leads the team with 30 goals, and Lucas Raymond tops in points and assists. Goalie John Gibson, acquired last offseason, has shown a resurgence, with 21 wins and potential to challenge his career high.

Detroit’s last victory over Colorado was in February 2024, with Kane scoring the overtime winner. The projected lineup includes Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Patrick Kane, and others, with Gibson and Cam Talbot sharing goal duties.

Fan Take: This game is a must-watch for hockey fans because it pits a resilient Avalanche team seeking to rebound against a revitalized Red Wings squad eager for playoff legitimacy.
