Princesa Moche, the 5-2 favorite, secured her first stakes win in Saturday’s $100,000 Megahertz (G3) with a thrilling three-way photo finish in the one-mile turf race at Santa Anita, competing against older mares. Trained by Doug O’Neill and piloted by jockey Mirco DeMuro, the filly, imported last year from Peru by Rancho San Roberto, is quickly proving her toughness in the U.S. racing scene.

This 5-year-old daughter of British sire Mwalie made her U.S. stakes debut in January at the Las Cienegas (G3), finishing a close second after leading early but being overtaken late by top turf filly Queen Maxima. In the Megahertz, Princesa Moche tracked the pacesetter Going Lucky through solid fractions, briefly appeared to weaken entering the stretch, but rallied fiercely to regain the lead and win decisively over 9-2 third favorite Vivez, ridden by Juan Hernandez.

DeMuro admitted he was momentarily concerned as the filly seemed to pause in the final turn, but she rallied with determination to claim victory. O’Neill praised her grit, likening her toughness to “Tanner from ‘Bad News Bears,’” emphasizing that despite her average size, she shows remarkable resilience. DeMuro also highlighted her strength and consistent effort over routes ranging from six furlongs to a mile.

Princesa Moche completed the race in 1:36.09. The race favorite, Public Assembly, finished fourth, just ahead of another strong contender. Before stepping up to stakes races, Princesa Moche earned a runner-up allowance finish at Del Mar in November. Her career now stands at 12 wins, 4 losses, and 5 placings from 39 starts with prize earnings exceeding $170,000. The winner’s payout was $7.
