Sabers Slip Out of Playoff Position, Fall to Last Wild Card Spot

The Buffalo Sabers’ streak of five consecutive wins came to an end on Saturday after Montreal Canadiens scored three goals in the third period, securing a 4-2 victory. The Sabers led 2-1 at one point, thanks to goals from Owen Power and Noah Ostlund, but couldn’t withstand Montreal’s sniper Cole Caufield’s efforts, as he scored both the tying and winning goals. This win allows the Canadiens to claim sole possession of third place in the Atlantic Division. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Boston Bruins lost in a shootout 6-5 to Tampa Bay during the Stadium Series, earning them an additional point and slightly surpassing Buffalo in the standings. With only three games left before the Winter Olympics pause the season, the Sabers remain in second place in the wild-card race, six points ahead of the emerging Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals.

Other Sabers-Related News
Six former Sabers have recently signed with new teams. While many fans believe that Buffalo’s impressive 20-4-1 run in December and January signals a turnaround for the team, the final stretch of the season will be a significant test. The nearly three-week Olympic break comes at an inopportune time, as it interrupts Buffalo’s momentum and misplaces injured players like Josh Norris, Jordan Greenway, Justin Danforth, and Jiri Klich, whose recoveries are progressing. Although this break could give the team a chance to regroup, there’s also concern that Buffalo might regress to their earlier struggles from October and November. Ultimately, only time will reveal how the hiatus impacts their performance.

Fan Take: The end of Buffalo’s winning streak and the impending Olympic break are crucial moments that could either propel the team to new heights or set them back. Hockey fans should stay tuned, as this pause may redefine Buffalo’s momentum for the rest of the season and their playoff prospects.
