Mavericks’ Jason Kidd Fires Up Over Cooper Flagg Question With Colorful Language

Despite the Dallas Mavericks enduring a four-game losing streak, their selection of Cooper Flagg as the No. 1 overall draft pick is proving to be a brilliant choice. The Duke standout scored 34 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a narrow 111-107 defeat against the Houston Rockets and then blasted 49 points on an impressive 20-of-29 shooting in a close 123-121 loss to the Charlotte Hornets. This performance set a new record for the most points scored by a teenager in an NBA game, marking Flagg’s second game with 40 or more points—a feat only matched by teenage legends LeBron James and Anthony Edwards.

Flagg’s rise hasn’t been without challenges, particularly as he was thrust into the primary ball-handler role. After the loss to Houston, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd responded adamantly to criticism about this move, expressing full confidence in his decisions based on his extensive high-level playing experience. Kidd dismissed the doubters, emphasizing that only those who have played the game truly understand what it takes to develop players, and that criticism only fuels his improvement.

In his initial seven games functioning as the team’s point guard, Flagg averaged 13.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 2.1 turnovers per game with a 38.8 percent shooting rate. Looking at the entirety of his rookie season, however, he stepped up his game significantly, averaging 19.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists while shooting a strong 48.4 percent from the field. Reflecting on his adjustment period, Flagg acknowledged the heavy pressure and responsibility tied to playing point guard, admitting he wasn’t fully prepared to handle it all immediately but appreciated having support that relieved some of that burden.

Looking ahead, Cooper Flagg is determined to maintain his momentum and help the Mavericks break their losing streak, starting with their upcoming game against the Boston Celtics.

Fan Take: Basketball enthusiasts should take notice of Cooper Flagg’s historic performances as they signal the arrival of a transformative young talent in the league. His ability to break records as a teenager not only excites fans but hints at a promising future that could help redefine the Mavericks and inspire a new era in the sport.
