Nylander sparks Maple Leafs to a 4-2 victory over Flames

The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Calgary Flames 4-2 on Monday night, with William Nylander opening the scoring just 35 seconds into the game on a breakaway and finishing with two assists. Alongside Nylander, Matthias Macelli and defenseman Troy Stecher also contributed with goals, helping Toronto break a six-game losing streak and secure their second win in a row after a 3-2 shootout victory in Vancouver on Saturday, which ended a period of poor form (0-5-1). Bobby McMann’s empty-net goal in the final 25 seconds clinched the win, while Joseph Woll, who made 28 saves, improved his record against Calgary to 5-0. This victory extended Toronto’s winning streak over the Flames to eight games, their longest active streak against any team.

For Calgary, Nazem Kadri and Joel Farabee each scored and assisted, although their team has now dropped six of its last seven games. Farabee, who also scored a shorthanded goal in Saturday’s win over San Jose, ended a personal five-game goalless drought. Flames rookie defenseman Zane Parekh played his first NHL game since November 7 but was held scoreless in over 20 minutes of ice time; he’s returning from injury sustained during the World Junior Championships. Calgary’s goalie Dustin Wolf made 18 saves in the loss.

Toronto now sits within seven points of the Boston Bruins, who hold the last Eastern Conference playoff spot. Nylander, a Calgary native, has amassed 13 goals and 23 assists in 26 games against his hometown team—his father Michael once played for the Flames in the 1990s.

Looking ahead, the Maple Leafs will face the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, concluding a four-game trip before the Olympic break, while the Flames will also meet the Oilers in their final game before the break.
