Dominik Szoboszlai has raised concerns about his future at Liverpool, indicating that his destiny is “not in my hands,” although he wishes to stay at Anfield. The 25-year-old midfielder has emerged as one of the club’s top talents, and discussions regarding a potential contract extension are reportedly in progress. His current deal lasts until 2028.

Szoboszlai eager to prolong his stay at Anfield

After Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday, which marked their return to consistent league victories since 2026, Szoboszlai spoke with the media. Despite this positive outcome, both Manchester United and Chelsea sit above Liverpool in the table, having secured wins over the weekend.

As captain of the Hungarian national team, Szoboszlai has made a strong impact this season, scoring eight goals and assisting seven across all competitions. His versatility allows him to play in various positions, from central midfield to right midfield, and even as a right-back.

The former RB Leipzig player expressed his desire to extend his stay at the club beyond 2028, yet he acknowledged that the decision is ultimately out of his hands. There has been reported interest from clubs such as Real Madrid, and it’s likely that several teams will vie for his signature if negotiations with Liverpool do not progress.

Regarding contract talks, Szoboszlai remarked: “Honestly, there’s been no progress. It’s out of my control. There’s nothing happening right now, but if the right opportunity arises, we’ll see.”

He continued, “I hope everyone is satisfied in the end. Of course, I want to stay. I love this city, the club, the fans, and playing at Anfield. We’ll see what the future has in store; it’s not something I can dictate, but I want to remain here.”

Hungarian star discusses the right-back role

After returning to the pitch, Szoboszlai addressed his time playing as right-back due to injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremy Frimpong: “To be honest, it’s not a long-term solution for me. I’m a midfielder, and I hope our right-back recovers soon. But if the team needs me, I’ll give my best effort. Currently, Wata (Endo) and Curtis (Jones) are available for that role, so we have options.”

Szoboszlai added, “I’m the type of person who always seeks to improve. I want to score as many goals and assists as possible and win numerous trophies. That’s my goal for growth and progress.”

Szoboszlai is a top choice for the team

This season, Szoboszlai has established himself as a key player for Liverpool, likely to be prominently featured in Arne Slot’s lineup alongside stars like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson. He has participated in 33 competitive matches, receiving only two red cards, underscoring his importance to the squad.

The adaptable midfielder is now regarded as one of the league’s finest talents, earning the admiration of manager Slot, who has deployed him in multiple positions during his tenure at Liverpool.

In November, Slot commented on Szoboszlai, suggesting that comparisons to Steven Gerrard are “probably the best compliment he could receive.” He noted, “Dom possesses numerous qualities, including his work off the ball, which has been impressive, particularly in the recent matches against Aston Villa and Real Madrid.”

Szoboszlai’s potential exit could have ripple effects on Liverpool’s performance and its standing in the league, emphasizing the ever-changing landscape of football.
