According to new reports this afternoon, Crystal Palace are worried that one of their players will miss out due to injury after he faces the need for surgery due to a troubling problem.

Crystal Palace’s turbulent deadline comes a day after spending £80m in January

The Eagles spent around £80m on new signings in the January transfer window, making a club-record two signings in a matter of weeks.

Oliver Glasner watched over Brennan Johnson’s big-money signing from Tottenham, but soon after that was overshadowed by a fee for striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, while Evan Gesand also signed on loan from Aston Villa.

If Guesand’s contract becomes permanent at the end of the season for around £28m, Palace’s winter spend will exceed £100m.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs has no qualms about splurging on Glasner, even though he plans to part ways with Palace when his contract expires in June.

Crystal Palace had one of the most exciting January transfer windows in the Premier League.

The Eagles also failed to make a last-minute deadline day move for Everton winger Dwight McNeil, despite agreeing terms with the Toffees and the player undergoing a medical.

Former striker Jean-Philippe Mateta’s sale to AC Milan fell through due to knee concerns, but Palace appear to have tried to change his terms at the last minute from a straight £20m deal to a loan deal.

According to David Ornstein, Glasner’s side then pulled out for good, which is sure to leave Everton pretty furious.

Speaking of Mateta, the Frenchman was dealt a blow after making headlines throughout January after announcing his decision to leave Selhurst Park.

Shortly after Milan terminated Mateta’s contract, BBC journalist Sami Mokbel reported this afternoon that the 28-year-old faces a surgical dilemma ahead of the World Cup.

Mateta was unable to undergo a medical check at Milan due to his ongoing knee problem, which Rossoneri experts have determined cannot be resolved through physical therapy or rehabilitation (BBC).

Instead, Milan’s doctors are adamant that Mateta will likely need surgery to correct his problem, which would keep him out for a long time.

With this in mind, Palace’s deal to sign Strand Larsen, who scored 14 Premier League goals for Wolves last season, looks even more urgent.

The Norwegian has been out of form this season, but a move to London and the guarantee of top-flight football next season could be the miracle that brings him back to his best.
