Sophie Cunningham Issues Candid Warning to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert on CBATalks

The WNBA’s 2026 season is planned to start on May 8, but the chances of a strike are growing as negotiations between the league and the WNBA Players Association (WNBPA) drag on without progress. Despite over a year of talks aimed at establishing a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the two sides remain far apart. With talks extended by another month, players have shifted from seeking progress to openly criticizing the league’s leadership, with Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham notably expressing blunt dissatisfaction.

During recent episodes of show me something, Cunningham gave a candid update on the stalled negotiations and highlighted the lack of visible support for Commissioner Cathy Engelbert amid the ongoing dispute. After a recent in-person meeting, Cunningham shared that frustration between the league and players is intensifying. “I had a big old meeting this week,” she said. “Negotiations haven’t moved forward, so we’re just pushing ahead hoping for progress. Both sides are frustrated, but the players are holding firm. It’s going to be interesting.”

The WNBPA pulled out of the previous CBA aiming for improved salaries and a better revenue-sharing model to reflect the league’s rapid expansion, but Cunningham emphasized that the issue goes beyond pay—it concerns the league’s future. “At the end of the day, it depends on how the negotiations play out and if players get what they want,” she explained. “We’ll still win because we have the best players, which will drive ticket sales. Everything will be fine. But right now, negotiations are a mess, and frankly, we’re the joke of the sports world.”

Cunningham disagreed with co-host West Wilson’s view that the current situation is unprecedented, arguing instead that the WNBA’s explosive growth in recent years has created new challenges that people just aren’t sure how to handle. She also took aim at league leadership: “That’s always the case when you’re in charge! Leadership is about influence and empowerment. For some reason, our league doesn’t show that. Everyone wants to be a star. Our commissioner barely engages with us during this standoff, yet can still promote the league on social media as if we don’t exist.”

While the players’ voices become stronger, the league office has largely remained quiet, widening the divide. This tension was evident in a recent face-to-face meeting in New York—the first in months—that was meant to advance talks but instead ended in more frustration, as Cunningham described.

Tensions Escalate as WNBA Arrives Without a Counterproposal

Recently, league officials and union leaders met in New York for a critical session expected to jumpstart stalled negotiations. It was their first face-to-face encounter since the previous fall. However, the meeting concluded without any breakthrough, primarily because the league came unprepared to respond to the players’ proposal submitted over a month earlier.

“They started the meeting by admitting no counterproposal was ready,” admitted union president Nneka Ogwumike. “That really set the tone for the discussion, and we had hoped that wouldn’t be the case.”

As a result, the three-hour meeting turned into more of a status update than a negotiation, with both sides explaining their stances without progress toward compromise. The main issues remain revenue sharing and salary structure: the league currently offers 15% of net revenue to players, while the players demand 30% of gross revenue.

With the WNBA season set to begin on May 8 and ongoing unresolved disputes in Major League Baseball business negotiations creating further uncertainty, questions mount about how long the WNBA can avoid a strike.

Fan Take: This standoff is crucial for WNBA fans because it highlights the growing pains of a rapidly expanding league fighting for fair player compensation and sustainable growth. If unresolved, it could lead to a strike that disrupts the upcoming season, impacting the momentum the sport has gained in recent years and leaving fans frustrated.
