  • Brandon Moreno’s Replacement Opponent for UFC Mexico City Announced
  • Who is Ron’er Kavanaugh?

It appears Brandon Moreno has a new adversary lined up for his much-anticipated return fight. Originally set to take on As Almabaev on February 28th, the former two-time flyweight champion’s bout was canceled when Almabaev suffered a hand injury. However, within a day, reports emerged that Moreno would still compete at Arena CDMX against a different opponent.

Brandon Moreno’s Replacement Opponent for UFC Mexico City Announced

Brandon Moreno is now expected to face Ron’er Kavanaugh at UFC Mexico City. Although the fight hasn’t been officially confirmed, MMA journalist Al Zurino stated that the matchup is finalized. “With As Almabaev out, Ron’er Kavanaugh will step in on short notice to face former UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno on February 28th at #UFCMexico, sources reveal.” Kavanaugh had been slated for a fight against Bruno Silva on March 14th at UFC Vegas 114.

Who is Ron’er Kavanaugh?

Ron’er Kavanaugh is an up-and-coming flyweight talent holding a 2-1 UFC record. The 26-year-old made an impressive debut in August 2021 by securing a highlight-reel knockout on Dana White’s Contender Series. Following that performance, Kavanaugh quickly earned a UFC contract and notched back-to-back wins inside the Octagon. He endured his first UFC loss last August at UFC Shanghai against “Prospect Killer” Charles Johnson. Currently, Kavanaugh’s professional MMA record stands at 9-1. Taking on Brandon Moreno in Mexico represents a tough challenge for the young fighter, especially given Moreno’s home crowd advantage.

Fan Take: This late opponent switch adds an unexpected twist to UFC Mexico City, testing both fighters’ adaptability and preparation. For fight fans, it’s a reminder of how dynamic matchmaking can shape the sport, while providing Kavanaugh a huge opportunity to make a name by dethroning a beloved former champion on his home turf.
