  • Why Manchester United are interested in Mateta
  • Crystal Palace prepare for life after Mateta

Manchester United could emerge as a surprise transfer destination for Jean-Philippe Mateta this summer, with reports claiming the Crystal Palace forward is currently on the radar of the Red Devils.

According to the Daily Mirror, a move to Old Trafford has become a realistic possibility after Mateta’s bid to join Milan fell through.

The 28-year-old striker is at an important point in his career. He is due to enter the final 12 months of his contract with Crystal Palace in June, and Palace may be forced to consider a reduced offer rather than risk losing him for free in the future.

This contractual situation has caused alarm among several clubs, with Man United currently monitoring developments closely.

Why Manchester United are interested in Mateta

Man United’s interest comes amid continued uncertainty surrounding attacking options.

The Red Devils have Benjamin Sesco signed last summer, but are still looking for more depth and quality in their attack.

Joshua Zirkzee is unpopular within the club and if he leaves United will need someone to replace him.

Mateta continued his form at Selhurst Park, developing into a reliable central player who can play up front or as a rotation option.

His ability to sustain play, occupy defenders and contribute consistently in the final third has been praised across the league.

Crystal Palace’s actions in the market suggest they are already planning ahead.

The Eagles have secured what is widely seen as Mateta’s long-term replacement, completing the £48m signing of Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

This move significantly changes Palace’s negotiating position, making them more likely to be willing to sell Mateta if a suitable offer is received.

Mateta may not be a strong player at Old Trafford, but he is still a player who can provide quality finishing and physicality up front.

Moreover, his experience in the Premier League will be useful for the Red Devils.
