NASCAR: Denny Hamlin Faces Shoulder Setback, Eyes Surgery Post-2026 Season

Denny Hamlin plans to compete while injured in the 2026 season. The 45-year-old driver revealed to reporters at Bowman Gray Stadium that he has re-aggravated a shoulder injury but will delay surgery until the season concludes due to the lengthy recovery period. Hamlin had surgery on his right rotator cuff following the 2023 season and managed the injury during its final weeks.

The shoulder strain resurfaced after Hamlin fell amidst the debris of his parents’ home, which was severely damaged in a fire. His father, Dennis Hamlin, passed away from injuries sustained in the December 28 blaze in Stanley, North Carolina, while his mother, Mary Lou, remains seriously injured but is reportedly improving. Prior to the fire, Dennis Hamlin’s health had been deteriorating, and Denny views the 2025 playoffs as his final chance to witness his father win a championship.

Although Hamlin won the season’s last race in Phoenix, he did not secure the championship. Despite leading 208 of the 319 laps, a late caution caused by William Byron’s tire failure led to a green-white-checkered finish that disrupted Hamlin’s four-tire pit strategy, allowing Kyle Larson to claim the title.

The close of 2025 was notable for Hamlin beyond racing, as his 23XI Racing team reached an important settlement in a lawsuit against NASCAR regarding the sanctioning body’s charter system. The resolution favored 23XI and Front Row Motorsports, with NASCAR granting the team a permanent charter after previously opposing it.

Often regarded as one of the best NASCAR drivers without a championship, Hamlin finished fifth in 2023 while coping with his shoulder injury. A crash at Homestead in the 34th race dashed any hopes he had of clinching that year’s title.

Looking ahead, the 2026 season will see a major change in the playoff format. NASCAR will bring back the 10-race Chase with its multi-round elimination style from 2014. The previous winner-takes-all final race will be eliminated, meaning the championship will go to the driver who accumulates the most points by the end of the playoffs.

Fan Take:
This news is a significant moment for NASCAR enthusiasts, as it highlights Hamlin’s resilience and determination to compete despite serious setbacks. The changes to the playoff format combined with Hamlin’s ongoing presence could lead to even more intense and strategic racing, potentially reshaping the championship landscape in exciting ways.
